Anything you do in the name of art is subjective

When I published my first novel in 2014 I was terrified beyond words of how it would be received. I wanted everyone to love it. Buy it. Five star review it. I wanted to make New York Times Bestseller – I mean which author doesn’t? And I accomplished most of those things except the coveted Bestseller title. However I did also have critics and people that didn’t like my (baby) book. I found myself focusing on the few negatives that I almost didn’t enjoy the many more positive feedback. That’s when I began to truly realize how subjective art is. My novels aren’t for everyone and never will be. Some will love it, some will hate it. What matters is that I don’t totally suck as an author and my writing continues to mature with each book that I write. My books will resonate with those it’s supposed to and probably be cast aside by others – it’s nothing personal. It’s art.
